The dangers pedestrians face every day out on the road were grimly highlighted the morning of January 12, 2017, when a young man was struck by a vehicle in the San Diego area. The incident occurred at about 7:00AM this morning while the teenage student was walking in the neighborhood of Tierrasanta, likely on his way to school. The accident occurred at the intersection of Santo Road and Porto Court, with the impact taking place at the 5100 block of Santo Road. Witnesses at the scene say the individual was jaywalking across the road when a passenger vehicle with a green light struck the pedestrian as the vehicle entered the intersection.
The victim, who is thought to be a student at the nearby Junipero Serra High School, was thrown into the air and landed in the middle of the intersection. Good Samaritans on the scene quickly acted to ensure traffic came to a standstill at the intersection while one passerby, Kenneth Higgins, exited his vehicle to assist the victim. Higgins saw the accident unfold and said the only thing on his mind was to get the boy to safety.
Officers arrived at the scene shortly after and blocked off the intersection as the victim was rushed to the hospital by paramedics. Police reported that the student sustained injuries to the head and arm, and that he was in a state of shock prior to be taken to the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian stayed at the scene and police reported that she was truly shaken by the accident and was crying while speaking with officers. A single shoe could be scene in the middle of the intersection, which was likely knocked off the boy during the impact.
No one else was hurt during the crash and a police officer on the scene, Officer Johnson, made sure the accident proved as an important reminder to always follow the rules of the road, especially when you are unprotected, as a bicyclist or pedestrian.
“It’s simply a matter of cross at the crosswalk; cross at light-controlled intersections. If everybody follows those rules — everybody stops at the red light, everybody stops at the red hand sign like they’re supposed to, everybody wins,” the officer added.
